한강 <채식주의자>

한강 작가의 책 중에서 가장 좋아하는 책이다. 아래는 goodreads에 썼던 리뷰를 옮긴 것이다.

 

The Vegetarian by Han Kang

This book bluntly portrays the problems of patriarchy in Korea, leaving me in shock both during and after reading it. However, making the reader uncomfortable was clearly part of the author’s intent, so after recovering from the initial shock, I took the time to reflect again on issues related to patriarchy, male violence, and the environment.
There are three men in the story, each of whom represents violence in different ways. Though their behavior is repulsive, it also reflects the kinds of violence that occur in reality. First, there's the sisters' father, who was abusive at home. Then there's Yeong-hye's husband, who doesn't see his wife as an equal person but rather as someone who simply serves him meals, prioritizing his own situation over understanding her. Lastly, there's Yeong-hye's brother-in-law (her sister's husband), who expresses his sexual desires in an inappropriate and disturbing way. The story unfolds from the perspectives of both Yeong-hye's husband and brother-in-law, with two separate narratives. What truly amazed me was how the author brilliantly captured the disgusting gaze these men cast upon the two women.
Through the sisters’ situation, I realized just how dangerous and terrifying violence imposed through coercion can be. What surprised me the most, though, was the fact that this book was written nearly 20 years ago. At that time, discussions about feminism in Korea were far less prominent than they are today. In fact, it was an era when people casually made misogynistic jokes. Yet, the author wrote this novel from an eco-feminist perspective. Given the social climate of that period, I imagine this book would have been difficult for the public to accept.
